Health Ministry To Hold Coronavirus Briefing, Industrial Output On Tap

  • South Africa's Health Ministry will hold a media briefing after the detection of the XBB.1.5 Omicron subvariant of SARS-CoV-2 in the country. Colloquially known under the name "Kraken," XBB.1.5. is the most transmissible descendant of Omicron. Virologists have called on South Africans to get vaccinated or seek booster shots.
  • Public Enterprises committee chair Khaya Magaxa said Eskom management will be called to parliament even before its official opening next month amid the unprecedented streak of rolling blackouts. Magaxa told Eyewitness News that he was not optimistic about the coming year.
  • The local statistics office will today release November manufacturing production data. It is expected that industrial output may have shrunk 3.5% Y/Y after growing 1.0% in October.
