House Republicans To Launch Impeachment Proceedings Against DHS Sec Mayorkas
10:00 ET 15:00 GMT: The House Homeland Security Committee will meet shortly to formally launch impeachment proceedings against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Three Republican state Attorneys General will provide testimony to the panel. Details and livestream here: LINK
- The impeachment is part of a broader Republican strategy to maintain focus on the US-Mexico border - a major political vulnerability for Biden - and to allege misconduct from Biden administration officials in response to criminal proceedings against former President Donald Trump.
- The Mayorkas impeachment is the first of potentially four impeachment proceedings against Biden admin officials. A process to impeach President Biden is underway and Rep Matt Rosendale (R-MT) introduced a resolution yesterday calling for the impeachment of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, in part, for failing to disclose his recent hospitalisation.
- The Washington Post reports: “Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) even raised the possibility of impeaching Attorney General Merrick Garland if Garland declines to prosecute Hunter Biden...”
- Punchbowl News notes that committee Chair Mark Green (R-TE), “will lead the debate, painting Mayorkas as a lawless tyrant who has purposefully encouraged open borders.”
- White House spokesman Ian Sams said in a statement: “House Republicans are less than ten days from sparking a partial government shutdown that many of their extreme members are rooting for, but instead of working full-time to avoid it, they are wasting time on political stunts.”
