House Speaker Vote Expected On July 4, PM Vote On July 13

THAILAND

The Secretariat of the House of Representatives has invited newly elected lawmakers to attend a meeting on July 4, one day after the opening ceremony of parliament, to elect the new Speaker and two Deputy Speakers, according to an official document shared by the Thai Enquirer.

  • Pheu Thai Secretary General Prasert Chantararuangthong said that his party will hold an internal meeting on June 27 to reach conclusion over the selection of the next House Speaker and will then engage in renewed talks with Move Forward Party the following day.
  • A joint sitting of both houses of parliament is expected to convene on July 13 to elect a new Prime Minister. It is unclear if the new PM will be named on that day amid lingering uncertainty over MFP leader Pita's ability to muster enough support behind his bid take office.
  • The Straits Times reported that the armed forces and the Royal Thai Policy are discussing measures to contain potential mass protests that could erupt if Pita is denied the opportunity to form government.
