Inflation Expectations Down Slightly, But Pricing Plans Up

SWEDEN

The KI Economic Tendency Indicator printed at 85.8 points in September (slightly up from a revised 85.3 in August), but remaining below the 90 handle indicating "much weaker growth than usual".

  • Confidence fell in all sectors other than manufacturing, with retail trade and services remaining below 90.
  • The most worrying print though is consumer confidence, which reversed an August rise to fall back below 70 - printing at 69.1 (vs 70.6 prior).
  • Consumer Inflation Expectations (for the next 12 months) came down slightly to 7.1%, from a surprisingly high 7.4% in August. However, industry selling prices continued rising - led by services businesses - and printed at 21 in September (vs 20 in August, 17 in June and July).
  • The expected number of employees and labour hoarding indicators fell in September for service sector businesses and industry overall. This provides some context to the rise in unemployment seen in August (to 8.0% vs 7.0% prior), and may suggest a continued weakening in the labour market to come, which should ease selling price pressures in the service sector in time.
