Houthi Attack in Red Sea Further Escalates Israeli Shipping Risks

A biofuel tanker was struck by a missile in the Red Sea Monday, launched from Houthi controlled territory in Yemen.

  • It is the latest attack on a vessel by Iran backed militants who have signaled their support for Hamas after the October 7 attacks.
  • “At around 4 p.m. EST on December 11, the Motor Tanker STRINDA was attacked by what is assessed to have been an Anti-Ship Cruise Missile (ASCM) launched from a Houthi controlled area of Yemen while passing through the Bab-el-Mandeb.” US Central Commond said via X.
  • The Norwegian flagged vessel was carrying feedstock to make biofuels when it was attacked according to the vessel operator. It was bound for Italy.
  • The Strinda was coming from Malaysia and was bound for the Suez Canal.
  • The Houthis have said they would attack ships that have links to or sailing toward Israel, saying they are “legitimate targets.
