HUF Remains Top Performer, RUB Most Vulnerable

EM FX
  • HUF remains the best performer so far this year among the EM world despite recent consolidation; the forint is up 4% against the USD and 3.5% against the Euro.
  • USDHUF find a local low at 307.11 yesterday before starting to edge higher; the pair is currently trading above the 312 level.
  • CLP and ‘risk-on’ ZAR are the second and third best performers this year, up 3.8% and 3.7%, respectively, against the USD.
  • Interestingly, the rand has performed well despite the rise in price volatility; ZAR generally tends to be sensitive to the dynamics of VIX (rising VIX, cheaper ZAR and vice versa).
  • On the other hand, geopolitical tensions between Russia and Europe/US has been weighing on the Ruble, which is the worst performing currency this year, down 2.2% against the greenback.
