Hungary Continues To Reject EU Oil Sanctions On Russia-BBG

Javier Blas at Bloomberg tweets: "Hungary continues to play hardball with the European Union Commission. Budapest says it will push for an exemption of pipeline deliveries from an embargo on Russian oil proposed by the European Commission."

  • RTRS: "Hungary foreign minister says the only realistic way to an oil embargo on Russia is if it only relates to maritime shipping of oil, pipeline shipments should be fully exempted"
  • The 'Coreper II' meeting of member state ambassadors to the EU currently underway in Brussels, and another takes place on Friday 13 May. Looking increasingly unlikely that a deal will be reached for ambassadors to sign off at either of these meetings.
  • Politico moots that Monday 16 May meeting of foreign ministers could be an opportunity for an agreement to be reached.
  • Negotiatons made more difficult by fact Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President Charles Michel are in Tokyo for EU-Japan summit Thuesday 12 and Friday 13 May.
