Hungary Look to Qatar for LNG from 2027

LNG

Hungary can begin to receive shipments of LNG from Qatar in 2027 according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto. Qatar has no spare export capacity until 2027.

  • "We have reached a political agreement, which is now followed by talks between energy companies Qatargas and Hungary's MVM to determine the quantity, pace and shipment route of the supplied gas to Hungary from 2027," Szijjarto said.
  • Hungary is also interested in purchasing gas from Romania’s Neptun deep project, according to Bloomberg last month. The supplies would help diversify their sources of energy although the country does not plan to fully replace Russian gas imports.
  • Hungary currently receives 4.5bcm of gas per year from Russia via Bulgaria and Serbia under a 15 year deal signed in 2021.
