HUNGARY: Orban Meets with Xi in Beijing as Part of “Peace Mission”

  • Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during a surprise visit to Beijing as part of the PM’s “peace mission”.  Xi Jinping repeated his call for a cease-fire in Ukraine while Orban congratulated Xi on "the stability China means for the world amid stormy global politics", according to MTI. The meeting follows a visit by the Hungarian leader to Moscow last week which prompted a sharp response from other EU member states. Orban will now travel to Washington, according to Bloomberg.
  • Budget balance data will cross at 10:00BST/11:00CET. Before that, cabinet minister Gergely Gulyas will hold a press briefing at 08:30BST/09:30CET after a government meeting held Sunday.
  • Looking ahead, CPI data is the key release of the week tomorrow morning, where the headline figure is expected to moderate from +4.0% Y/Y in May to +3.9% in June. Month-on-month, prices are seen rising +0.2% compared to a 0.1% fall the month prior.
