Hungary Won’t Amend Asylum, LGBTQ Laws for EU Funds, Gulyas Says

HUNGARY
  • Hungary won’t meet EU demands to amend controversial laws on asylum seekers and on restricting LGBTQ content, Cabinet Minister Gergely Gulyas told reporters. The minister added that the two pieces of legislation are beyond “red lines” that Hungary won’t cross to access EU money.
  • Yesterday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the rest of the EU funding, suspended for reasons that included concerns on LGBTIQ rights, academic freedom and asylum rights, would "remain blocked until Hungary fulfils all the necessary conditions".
  • As a result, Budapest is likely to receive a hostile reception from some quarters of the European Parliament later today, with a large number of lawmakers likely to retain VdL's stance that funding should remain blocked until these issues are resolved. The vote will take place during the 1100GMT session. Livestream link here.
  • The comments from Gulyas are potentially adding to forint headwinds today, with EURHUF last dealing near yesterday’s highs and the local currency underperforming compared to its regional peers.
