IEC Warns Of Disputed Election Outcome If Zuma Is Allowed To Stand

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has urged the Constitutional Court to urgently consider the eligibility of ex-President Jacob Zuma to stand in elections, arguing that his presence on the candidate list would raise the risk of a contested electoral outcome. According to the Mail & Guardian, the IEC's lawyers insisted that the matter must be resolved before rather than after the elections.
  • In a separate case, three political parties decided to take the IEC to the Constitutional Court over the decision not to allow them to contest the elections. The African Congress for Transformation (ACT), South African Labour Party (SALP) and the Afrikan Alliance of Social Democrats (AASD) are arguing that their failure to submit candidate lists by the deadline was caused by a malfunction of the IEC's online portal.
  • The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) reported that the volume of its net reserves in April was $57.85bn versus $57.51 prior. Gross reserves were $61.80bn, down from $62.32bn in March.
  • The National Treasury will auction 2030 floating bonds today.
