IIF Chief Economist Sees Impending Credit Boom Eroding Turkey's Current Account Surplus

TURKEY
  • IIF Economist Robin Brooks on Turkey's recent Current Account Surplus:
  • "Turkey's current account in August swung into a +$1 bn surplus (black). Better than Aug '20, when the deficit was -$4 bn, but not as good as the surplus Aug '19 at +$3 bn or Aug '18 at +$2 bn.
  • Problem is that a credit boom will push Turkey back into big c/a deficit looking ahead."
  • It is also worth noting that the IIF has a 9.50 USD/TRY fair value estimate
