Incumbent Centre-Right Win Majority In Follow Up Election

GREECE

Greece has returned to the polls just over a month after the last election. The centre-right PD of PM Mitsotakis couldn’t form a majority after May’s result and so waited for election reforms that reintroduced a seat bonus to the winning party. Results are showing that PD won 40.6% of the vote in June after 40.8% in May and will gain the maximum 50 seat bonus giving it 158 seats and a majority in the 300 seat parliament.

  • PD increased its share since the 2019 election, which is unusual, but voters have been supportive of its economic management.
  • There was a shift to the right in the June election compared with May following the migrant boat tragedy on June 14. Far right parties, including some new ones, won 13% of the vote and 34 seats.
  • The leftist Syriza lost support winning only 17.8% of the vote down from 20.1% in May and the centre-left PASOK was slightly higher at 11.9% after 11.5%.
  • Voter participation fell 8pp to only 53%.
