India to Raise Crude Flow from Iraq & Mexico After Venezuela Sanctions: FGE

India is expected to increase imports of oil grades comparable to Venezuela’s crude after the US reinstated sanctions on the country’s oil and gas sector, according to FGE this week.

  • Iraq’s Basrah Heavy and Mexico’s Maya crude are alternatives to the heavy-sour Merey grade from Venezuela.
  • India’s imports of Venezuelan Merey crude averaged 110kb/d in January-April mostly purchased by Reliance but also by Indian Oil and HMEL.
  • Delivered prices of Venezuelan crude were about $15/bbl cheaper than average prices of Russian crude at around $60-$62/bbl in Jan.-Feb., according to India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry data.
  • FGE expect Venezuelan crude is likely to be redirected to China under the guise of ‘diluted bitumen.’
