SOUTH KOREA: Investigators Seek Arrest Warrant For Yoon

SOUTH KOREA

Yonhap News reportingthat the Senior Civil Servants' Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) is seeking an arrest warrant for suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol. The request comes at the end of the 48-hour period during which Yoon has been detained for questioning over his role in the short-lived imposition of martial law in Dec 2024. Following the end of the questioning period, in which Yoon maintained his right to silence, investigators were obliged to either request a formal arrest warrant or release the president.

  • Earlier, Yoon's attorney Seok Dong-hyun said , “If the CIO requests an arrest warrant, it will explain in a substantive examination how unfair and untrue the charges of sedition against the president are....[The CIO’s request for an arrest warrant] is truly inappropriate...The president has no reason to flee or destroy evidence.”
  • This marks the first time in South Korea's history that an arrest warrant has been sought for a sitting president. It remains to be seen whether Yoon will appear in front of the Constitutional Court next Tuesday (21 Jan) as his impeachment trial continues.
