Russian President Vladimir Putin is speaking at a press conference in Moscow alongside his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian. The main reason for Pezeshkian's visit has been the signing of a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty that intends to formalise and deepen economic, technological and military cooperation between the two countries.
- Ties between Moscow and Tehran have become closer since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with Iran becoming a key supplier of drone to Russia for use in its attacks on Ukrainian energy and civilian infrastructure. For Iran, which has suffered significant geopolitical setbacks in the form of a crumbling of its 'axis of resistance' (Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis) and the prospect of new sanctions under the Trump administration in the US, securing Russia's long-term support comes at an opportune time.
- Putin: "These projects (the gas pipeline from Russia to Iran and the North-South corridor - ed.) are in progress. And we assume that they will be implemented," Says that Russia will begin supplying small quantities of natural gas to Iran, with technical issues to be discussed. Adds that up to 55 BCM/year could eventually be supplied.
- The two also discussed the prospect of Russia building new nuclear power stations in Iran. Putin: "We have a huge project in nuclear energy. One unit is already operating successfully. We are currently discussing the possibility of building additional units,"
