ISM Mfg - Prices Paid Fall Further But So Too Do New Orders

US DATA
  • The ISM manufacturing survey was as expected at headline level, falling further from 49.0 to 48.4 (cons 48.5) in Dec.
  • There were some notable movements within the components though:
  • Prices paid of 39.4 (-3.6pts) dips below the 40.8 of May’20 to move closer to the Apr’20 cycle low of 35.3.
  • Ahead of payrolls on Friday, employment bounced with the 51.4 (+3pts) the highest since Aug and prior to that March.
  • However, new orders fell even further to 45.2 (-2pts), still the lowest since May’20 and with the balance of new orders less inventories pointing to sizeable further downside to the ISM headline reading ahead.
  • The more heavily weighted service survey follows on Friday.
