ISM Report Shows Continued Demand / Supply Gap

DATA REACT

Many usual themes in November's ISM Manufacturing report, with ISM Chair Fiore in the press release characterizing the state of play as a "demand-driven, supply chain-constrained environment, with some indications of slight labor and supplier delivery improvement".

  • One metric suggesting the squeeze on manufacturers in light of customer demand is the large gap between backlogs in orders on the one hand, and customers' inventories on the other. Backlogs continue to edge lower from record highs, but the client inventories subindex has reversed lower after a nascent bounce, and is just above the all-time low (25.1 vs 25.0 low set in July).
  • So although prices paid continued to dip from historically elevated levels (82.4 vs 85.7 prior and 92.1 high in June), the demand / backlog mismatch remains wide, suggesting inflationary pressures will persist.
