Ismail Sabri, Opposition Leaders Declare Ceasefire

ASIA

Malaysian PM Ismail Sabri extended an olive branch to the opposition Wednesday, strengthening his position ahead of a confidence vote, with his unprecedented move reducing political uncertainty in Malaysia.

  • The Premier met with leaders of the opposition Pakatan Harapan alliance to discuss reform plans. In a rare joint statement, Ismail Sabri together with PKR President Anwar, DAP Secretary General Lim and Amanah President Sabu committed to strengthening the role of the parliament, protecting judicial independence and focusing on proper management of the pandemic.
  • Anwar Ibrahim said that the opposition would not "complicate" the upcoming confidence vote if the Prime Minister keeps promises made to Pakatan Harapan leaders.
  • Straits Times sources said that leaders discussed a confidence and supply pact, whereby Pakatan Harapan lawmakers would back Ismail Sabri in a confidence vote and "support Bills relating to government expenditure".
  • Cooperation between the government and the opposition would bring some reprieve after months of elevated political uncertainty, when it remained unclear whether the then PM Muhyiddin still commanded a parliamentary majority.
  • Ismail Sabri is expected to submit the line-up of his Cabinet to the King today. The Star cited a source noting that the Cabinet will likely be formed and hold its first meeting before next Tuesday's National Day.
