ISRAEL: Axios-PM To Hold Security Cabinet Talks On Deal To End Lebanon Conflict

ISRAEL

Barak Ravid at Axios posts on X: "Prime Minister Netanyahu will hold a discussion this evening with the participation of several ministers and senior officials in the defense establishment regarding the [talks] for a political settlement to end the war in Lebanon, according to two sources who comment on the matter". As has been the case during Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza, the Netanyahu gov't has set out its stall with regard to its objectives in its war in Lebanon namely the destruction of Hezbollah.

  • The effective targeting of Hezbollah operatives in device detonations, assassination strikes on many Hezbollah commanders, and airstikes/ground operations targeting Hezbollah weapons caches have all served to fundamentally destabilise Hezbollah and limit its ability to wage an effective defence against Israeli advances, let alone mount significant rocket and missile attacks on Israeli territory.
  • The gov't pushed back on a Channel 12 report on 28 Oct that claimed the IDF could in an agreement with the US restrain its scope in southern Lebanon in exchange for future operational freedom in Lebanon to limit Hezbollah's ability to re-establish itself. The Times of Israel reports an Israeli source saying "Netanyahu is eager to wrap up fighting in Lebanon with a diplomatic arrangement that locks in Israel’s demands that Hezbollah remove itself from southern Lebanon."
  • Any diplomatic end to the conflict in Lebanon would reduce regional tensions in the short term, although there is no guarantee how long such a ceasefire agreement might last amid the potential for a continued IDF presence.
