Speaking to Reuters, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen has said that the gov't is "at a point that we are closer to an arrangement [with Hezbollah] than we have been since the start of the war,” Cohen goes on to say that a key red line for Israel is that the IDF retains the freedom to renew hostilities if Hezbollah is seen to be returning to border regions where they could pose a threat to Israeli communities. Cohen: “We will be less forgiving than in the past over attempts to create strongholds in territory near Israel. That’s how we will be, and so that is certainly how we will act,”
- The comments from Cohen come less than 24 hours after the Washington Post reported that Israel is preparing a Lebanon ceasefire as a "gift" to US President-Elect Donald Trump.
- The situation in the Middle East remains in a state of flux. On the one hand, there has been increasing talk of a ceasefire in Lebanon, a development that would undoubtedly prove de-escalatory.
- On the other, there is little sign that an imminent ceasefire for hostages deal in Gaza is likely. Qatar suspending its role as a mediator between Israel and Hamas, citing both sides refusal to negotiate, bodes poorly for any imminent resolution. There is also the prospect of Iranian retaliation to Israel's late-October strikes on Iranian military facilities. Egyptian outlet Al Qahera reports Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stating on 14 Nov that "We will respond decisively and firmly to any action targeting our security".
