Israel Energy Minister Favours Boosting Natgas Exports

NATURAL GAS

Israel’s Energy Minister Israel Katz said Aug. 1 that more of its natural gas reserves should be allowed for export.

  • “Our ability to export gas, in a controlled manner, as I’ve said, is a great diplomatic weapon that strengthens Israel’s position in the region, and the world,” he said.
  • Israel limits how much gas can be exported to ensure it meets domestic demand, but Israel’s Budget director previously warned in July that it risked over-exporting and jeopardizing energy security.
  • A total of 43% of Israel’s 21.29 bcm production in 2022 was exported, sent to Egypt and Jordan.
  • Israel is seeking to double natural gas reduction in the next few years and develop new export markets, such as Europe. Its largest gas field, Leviathan, currently exports 12 bcm/ year, with the goal of increasing production to 21 bcm/year.
