Israel Fast Tracks Historic Maritime Border Deal

Israel’s cabinet endorsed a deal today delineating a maritime border with Lebanon designed to open the region for gas production. It enters a two-week parliamentary review before it goes into force.

  • The border will take effect once Lebanon and Israel send letters to Washington, which will issue a notice announcing the deal is in place.
  • On the day the deal is agreed, Lebanon and Israel will simultaneously send identical coordinates to the United Nations laying out the boundary's location.
  • TotalEnergies is set to begin exploration at the Qana prospect immediately after the deal takes effect. Earlier moves for them to do so had stoked tensions around the deal.
