ISRAEL: Netanyahu Fires Defence Minister Gallant, Elevates Katz

ISRAEL

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and appointed Israel Katz as new defence minister, citing “significant differences” with Gallant over war strategy.

  • Netanyahu said in a statement: “In the midst of a war, more than ever, full trust is required... over the past few months this trust has cracked between me and the defence minister.”
  • Gallant said in message on X: "The security of the State of Israel was and will always remain the mission of my life."
  • Netanyahu added that, "Katz has proven his capability and dedication to national security, as both Foreign Minister, Finance Minister, and Intelligence Minister for five years, as well as a longstanding member of the Security Cabinet... He brings an impressive combination of experience and practical skill, known as a ‘bulldozer’..."
  • The move comes after an extended period of tensions between Netanyahu and Gallant, which came to a head during Israel’s strike on Iran in late October. The Times of Israel reported on Oct. 28: “Gallant sent a harshly-worded missive to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning that Israel’s war efforts had become aimless and needed to be refocused given regional developments in the past year…”
  • Barak Ravid writes: "Netanyahu's move in the middle of a multi-front war is being driven mostly by domestic political consideration and the need to pass laws that benefits ultra-orthodox students who don't serve in the military. Gallant opposes the laws, while the ultra-orthodox parties in the coalition threaten to topple the government if the laws doesn't pass in the coming days."
