ISRAEL: Netanyahu's Position Becomes More Assured As Sa'ar Rejoins Gov't

ISRAEL

Over the weekend former minister and deputy PM Gideon Sa'ar brought his right-wing New Hope party back into the governing coalition, bolstering PM Benjamin Netanyahu's position. Perceived slowness in securing the release of hostages held by Hamas saw public support for the gov't, and Netanyahu in particular, slump sharply in the first half of 2024. Moreover, the possibility of a ceasefire in Gaza and disagreements between moderates in cabinet and the far-right ultranationalist Religious Zionism and Otzma Yehudit parties risked the latter parties withdrawing their support and bringing the gov't down.

  • However, support for Netanyahu's Likud has ticked up in recent weeks, and the IDF's successful actions to date in looking to collapse Hezbollah as an effective fighting force could boost the gov'ts standing further. The addition of the four Knesset members from Sa'ar's party provides another boost to gov't stability, with the coalition now holding 68 of 120 seats. While Sa'ar has been a fierce critic of Netanyahu previously, his appointment as minister without portfolio and seat in the Security Council appears to have won the hawkish Sa'ar over.
  • New Hope rejoining the coalition also raises the chances of the controversial conscription bill being passed. Earlier this year the Supreme Court ruled that ultra-Orthodox students must be drafted into the military reserves alongside other young Israelis. The Haredi parties in gov't (Shas and UTJ) have pushed back, but the addition of New Hope to gov't dilutes their ability to block the legislation.
