ISRAEL: Pentagon-THAAD System Arriving, To Be Operational 'In Near Future'

ISRAEL

The Pentagon has confirmed that system components from its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system began to arrive in Israel on 14 Oct, and that the system will be operational 'in the near future'. The provision of the missile defence system, intended to assist Israel in shooting down ballistic missiles, comes after a call between US President Joe Biden and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu in which the Israeli PM was believed to indicate that his gov't would pursue a less escalatory retaliation against the Iranian military, rather than oil or nuclear sites (see 'ISRAEL: PM & Def Min Reach Agreement On Iran Response', 0830BST).

  • The provision of THAAD will come with a deployment of 100 US troops to aid with its operation. Speaking on 13 Oct, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that the US was putting its troops "at risk by deploying them to operate US missile systems in Israel". In the event of any future Iranian attack, Tehran is likely to seek to avoid any US casualties that could risk more direct American involvement in the conflict.
