ISRAEL: Sec. Cab. To Meet @ 1730 Local On 26 Nov To Approve Lebanon Ceasefire

ISRAEL

Following on from the earlier headlines reporting that a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah had been agreed (see 'ISRAEL: Axios-US Believes Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire Deal Reached', 1409GMT), reports have emerged claiming that the Security Cabinet will meet at the Kirya in Tel Aviv at 1730 local time (1030ET, 1530GMT, 1630CET) in order to give their final approval.

  • Channel 12 reports that once approved, the ceasefire can be implemented within 72 hours and will see hostilities halted for at least 60 days.
  • The Guardian reports that under the prospective deal, "the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would withdraw entirely from southern Lebanon, Hezbollah would pull its heavy weapons north of the Litani River, about 16 miles (25km) north of the Israeli border, and the Lebanese army would move in to provide security in the border zone alongside an existing UN peacekeeping force,"
  • There would be a five-nation monitoring committee contributing peacekeepers to the region to ensure both sides adhere to the deal. This would include US forces.
