ITALY: Meloni Confirms MidEast Trip, Will Not Be At Biden Meeting

ITALY

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni has confirmed that she will travel, as planned, to Lebanon on Friday 18 October. This trip will see her miss a high-profile meeting of Western leaders, with US President Joe Biden in Berlin for a meeting alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British PM Sir Keir Starmer. Meloni said she "could not attend under any circumstance" with Italian troops, serving as part of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNFIL), having come under fire from Israel over 20 times since 1 Oct.

  • In something of a rebuke to the high-level talks in Berlin, Meloni said at a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels "Maybe it would be more effective to talk to people in the region than to do so among ourselves. That is why this trip is a priority for me,"
  • Italy's La Reppublica reports that rather than deciding against attending the Biden meeting in Berlin to visit Lebanon, Meloni's absence is in fact due to the lack of an invite to the PM from the US President. The lack of an invitation to Meloni, serving as president of the G7 in 2024, could be viewed as a notable diplomatic snub given that the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East are due to be the main topics of discussion.
