Italy to Still Target 131GW of Renewables by 2030 in Final NECP

The Italy ministry has confirmed in its final National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) to target 131GW of renewables by 2030, also laying out a scenario where 8GW of nuclear will be installed by 2050, it said.

  • Italy is targeting 79.2GW of Solar, 28.1GW of wind, 19.4GW of hydro, 3.2GW of bioenergy and 1GW from geothermal sources by 2030.
  • The country’s renewable capacity was at around 65.2GW at the end of 2023, according to Statista.
  • Italy is also targeting a 66% reduction in emissions compared to 2005 levels. This is also higher than the EU target of 62%.
  • Additionally, it plans to improve energy connections with other European countries and strengthen Italy's role as a renewable energy hub in the Mediterranean area.
