Japan Apr Retail Sales +5.0% Y/Y; 14th Monthly Rise

  • Japanese retail sales rose 5.0% y/y in April, following the 6.9% y/y growth reported last month, marking the 14th monthly rise.
  • On a monthly basis, retail sales fell 1.2%, lower from last 0.3% growth in March.
  • General merchandise sales picked up 6.9% y/y, faster than the 5.4% y/y increase last month, while sales of fabric apparels and accessories falling 1.3% y/y, expanding from the decrease of 0.5% y/y in March.
  • Sales of food and beverages increased 6.6% y/y, following the 5.4% y/y growth last month.
  • Fuel sales, another key driver, dropped 3.3% y/y, compared with the 2.7% y/y decrease made in March.
  • Sales of machinery and equipment decreased 6.9% y/y, dipping further from last 3.9% y/y drop in March.
