Japan Assessing Sakhalin-2 Interests

Japan still views the Sakhalin-2 project as important for proving power and gas supplies for the country and intends to continue protecting its interests in the project according to government spokesperson Seiji Kihara today.

  • "The Sakhalin-2 is an important project for Japan from the standpoint of electric power and gas provision. The government and the business will act together to protect stable supplies of liquefied natural gas," Kihara said.
  • Japan is assessing the situation around Russia’s decision last week to transfer control of the project to a Russian company and how that will impact Japanese stakes. Gazprom has the controlling stake (50% plus one share) in the project. Shell has 27.5% of shares, while Japan’s Mitsui and Mitsubishi have 12.5% and 10% accordingly.
