Japan Dec Exports +9.8% Y/Y; Imports -6.8% Y/Y

  • Japan's exports registered a 9.8% y/y increase in December, up from the 0.2% y/y decrease marked in November, pushing the exports for 2023 growing 2.8%.
  • Imports fell 6.8% y/y in December, narrowing from the 11.9% y/y drop last month. Imports fell 7.0% in 2023, compared with rising 39.6% in the previous year.
  • Trade balance in December was a surplus of Y62.1 billion, compared with the previous Y776.9 billion deficit.
  • Exports to the United States, the European Union and China rose 20.4%, 10.3% and 9.6%, respectively.
  • Imports from the United States and the EU decreased 6.9% and 9.2% respectively, and those from China rose 0.4%.
