LNG: Japan Gas Association Seeks to Remove Long Term LNG Destination Clauses
LNG
Japan Gas Association urged stronger diplomacy to eliminate destination clauses in long-term LNG contracts to ensure flexibility for resale to be able to react to changing demand, according to Reuters.
- Approximately half of long-term Japanese LNG contracts still have destination clauses, Japan Gas Association Chairman Takashi Uchida said.
- "Qatar, for example, has yet to eliminate destination clauses. So we hope our government will conduct stronger resource diplomacy," he said.
- Japan is urging LNG buyers to secure more overseas supplies to mitigate the risk of spot price volatility and supply disruptions amid growing electrification and the AI boom, a draft of a revised energy strategy showed this week. LNG-fired power is necessary as a means of energy transition to cleaner energy.
- The Japanese public and private sectors must work together to secure long-term LNG deals, the draft said.
