Japan Mar Retail Sales +1.2% Y/Y

  • Japanese retail sales rose 1.2% y/y in March, slower from the 4.7% y/y growth reported last month.
  • On a monthly basis, retail sales rose 1.5%, compared with the 0.2% increase previously.
  • General merchandise sales increased 6.1% y/y, lower than the 8.3% y/y increase last month, while sales of fabric apparels and accessories falling 3.8%, compared with last 3.3% fall.
  • Sales of food and beverages increased 4.6% y/y, after growing 6.0% y/y last month.
  • Fuel sales, another key driver, increased 7.3% y/y, up from the 2.5% y/y increase made in February.
  • Sales of machinery and equipment up 8.1% y/y, accelerating from the 6.3% y/y growth last month.
