Japan Tokyo Feb CPI -0.3% Y/Y; 7th Monthly Fall

  • The core consumer price index (excluding fresh food) in the Tokyo area, a leading indicator of the national average, declined for the seventh straight month by 0.3% y/y in February, narrower than the previous 0.4% y/y fall.
  • Energy costs fell 9.8% y/y, decelerating from last month's 10.9% y/y drop.
  • Processed food prices edged down 0.1% y/y, following the previous 0.2% y/y fall.
  • Prices for household durable goods rose 4.0% y/y, quicker than the previous 3.2% y/y gain.
  • The core-core CPI (excluding fresh food and energy) -- a key indicator in the underlying trend of inflation -- was up 0.2% y/y in February, unchanged from last month.
