Japanese Utility LNG Stockpiles Rise to 2.01m mt

LNG stockpiles among Japanese power generators rose 10.4% to 2.01m mt in the week to Aug. 27, according to data released by the trade ministry.

  • Stockpiles are running near the 5-year average level for late August.
  • However, volumes are down 26.9% from the previous year when stockpiles were 2.75m mt.
  • Healthy stock levels in Japan have assuaged some concerns in Japan about supply issues in the event of short-term strikes at several Australian LNG facilities.
  • In 2023 to date, Japan has accounted for 46.6% of total LNG exports from the Gorgon and Wheatstone projects, according to Platts. Workers at these facilities are planning intermittent stoppages Sept. 7-9.
