Judicial Selection Panel Vote Concludes, Results Due Shortly

ISRAEL

The vote count after a secret ballot on the election of Knesset representatives to the Judicial Selection Committee is expected to wrap up shortly, with most expecting parliament to reject both candidates, which would effectively delay the filling of two vacant seats on the panel by 30 days.

  • The Times of Israel reported that police were seen putting up barricades near Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem in apparent anticipation of potential street protests by the opponents of the government's judicial overhaul.
  • Ynet reports that "Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich threatened that if the opposition blows up the compromise talks on the legal revolution, following the apparent postponement of the election of representatives in the committee for selecting judges - then the coalition will independently advance parts of the reform."
  • Separately, MK Tally Gotliv told Ynet that she had "zero" chances of being elected today but vowed that she would stand in another round of the elections to the Judicial Selection Committee today's vote is inconclusive. She said that the coalition cannot punish her for defying its line as there is no discipline over secret ballots.
  • Opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz said that they will hold a joint press conference after the results of the voting are announced.
