-UK Q2 Retail Sales Unrevised at +1.5% q/q
-UK ONS: Retail Sales Subdued H1 2017; Food Sales Rebound in July
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Sales volumes increased by 0.3% m/m in July, in line with the
outturn in June (revised down from 0.6% m/m), reinforcing a somewhat
subdued picture of consumer activity in the first six months of 2017.
July's result was lifted by food store sales sales, up 1.5% m/m after
falling 1.1% m/m in June, accounting for 0.5pp of the 0.3% rise in total
sales between June and July. This was offset by falling non-store
retailing sales (-0.9% m/m) and fuel sales (-1.1% m/m). Within the food
category, there was annecdotal evidence of a rise in supermarket sales,
across a range of goods including food and household goods, which more
than offset a decline in alcohol and specialised food sales.
