July Durable Goods New Orders +11.2%; Ex-trans +2.4%

  • U.S. durable goods new orders surged in July, rising 11.2% and more than doubling market expectations for a 4.7% increase, according to figures released Wednesday by the Commerce Department. That followed a upward revised 7.7% gain in June.
  • Orders of transportation equipment rose 35.6% after climbing by 19.7% in June. New orders for defense aircraft and parts rose 77.1% in July after falling 29.2% in June. Motor vehicle orders were up 21.9%, slowing from an 85.6% gain in June.
  • Excluding transportation, durable goods new orders were up 2.4% when markets had expected a gain of 2.0%.
  • Capital goods orders rose 13.6% after falling 15.7% in June. That was mainly driven by orders of defense capital goods, which were up 30% in July after falling 16.7% in June.
  • Nondefense capital goods rose 10.2% in July following a 15.5% decline in June. Excluding aircraft, nondefense capital goods were up 1.9%.
