June Flash Sees Inflation Highest Since Oct '96

POLAND
MNI (London)
  • The June flash estimate sees polish inflation rising to a fresh 26-year high at 15.6% y/y in June, a steep 1.7pp uptick on May. Prices are expected to have risen by 1.5% m/m, edging down modestly from 1.7% m/m in May.
  • This is the fourth consecutive month of acceleration, with the annualised reading climbing over 1.4pp each month.
  • Energy and food prices continued to be the key upwards drivers in June, as price pressures build further due to Poland's economic exposure to the effects of the war in Ukraine. With USDPLN having risen over 6% in June alone, the exchange rate has added additional upwards pressure to inflation.
  • The Polish central bank is due to meet next Thursday. As such, today's inflation print underscores the likelihood of another 75bp hike for July.
