Justice Minister Threatens To Resign If There Is No Progress On Judicial Overhaul

ISRAEL

Israel's Justice Minister Yariv Levin, the main architect of the controversial judicial overhaul which provoked mass protests earlier this year, reportedly told his associates that he might quit government unless at least some of his judicial reforms are passed by the Knesset before the end of July.

  • Channel 12 reported that Levin would like the government to press ahead with the legislation after passing the state budget if compromise talks mediated by President Isaac Herzog do not bring any breakthrough.
  • The report notes that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was ready to finish the current Knesset session without bringing the contentious legislation back to the floor but may face pressure from more radical members of his party and coalition.
  • Israeli media reported that judicial reform negotiations will resume tomorrow at 10:00am local time after a temporary freeze caused by violent clashes with Palestinian paramilitaries in the Gaza Strip.
