Knesset Begins Vote On Judicial Selection Committee Nominations

ISRAEL

Israeli media outlets report that the Knesset has begun voting on the candidates for the Judicial Selection Committee. Likud MK Tally Gotliv and opposition Yesh Atid MK Karine Elharrar are the only two remaining candidates, which means that lawmakers only get to vote "for" or "against" their nominations.

  • The vote was expected to start around 11:30am local time but there has been a delay. Knesset members are using a special voting booth as the decision is made by secret ballot. It is unclear how long it could take to count the votes, but yesterday's press reports suggested that the results could be announced after approximately three hours.
  • As a reminder, opposition leaders said that if coalition MKs follow the instructions of PM Netanyahu and reject both candidates, the ongoing judicial overhaul talks brokered by President Isaac Herzog would collapse.
