Kurz: EU Vaccine Steering Board Making 'Secret Side-Deals' w/Producers

AUSTRIA

Oliver Grimm at Die Presse tweets: "[Chancellor] Sebastian Kurz is at a press conference right now claiming that not all 27 member states receive vaccines on a pro-rata population basis. Says Malta gets 3x more than Bulgaria, the Netherlands more than Germany. He accuses the Steering Board of striking secret side-deals with the vaccine companies, talks about a "bazar" between certain member states and vaccine producers. Link to the press conference here: https://t.co/nR3IeaxhhH. Fun fact: Deputy chair of the Steering Board is the Austrian mandarin in the health ministry, Clemens Martin Auer. Kurz says he still doesn't know whats in these supposed side deals, because he says they are secret. Interestingly, Kurz says Austria hasn't been disadvantaged so far. So the rather lacklustre vaccination performance in Austria isn't down to an unjustified lack of vaccines."

  • Grimm's report of Kurz's allegations of 'secret side deals' made by the European Commission's Steering Board on vaccines is likely to provoke a reaction from Brussels.
