Kusile Unit 3 Comes Online Allowing For Longer Suspension Of Loadshedding

  • The return to service of unit 3 of Kusile power station, combined with improved generation performance and the lower than anticipated demand for electricity, allowed Eskom to suspend loadshedding until 16:00 today. Loadshedding will resume at Stage 2 thereafter. Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa noted that Kusile Unit 3 was returned to service two months ahead of schedule and this should eventually improve the available generation capacity by 800MW, helping alleviate loadshedding in the short term. Unit 3 is currently producing 550MW, while units 1 and 2 are expected to come online by the end of next month.
  • SAGB yields last week printed their best levels since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic before correcting the moves on Friday, with Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana under pressure to present a credible fiscal consolidation plan in his Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) on November 1. The Daily Maverick reports that the Treasury has a limited set of options as the ruling ANC party has ruled out most of its proposals to trim government spending and raise revenue. According to the news outlet, "most market watchers have said the Treasury will now be under pressure to borrow more money just to shore up its financial position".
  • Absa will release South African Manufacturing PMI at 10:00BST/11:00SAST. According to a Bloomberg survey, the index may have fallen to 49.5 in August from 49.7 prior.
