Kuwait’s Shifting Exports from Crude to Refined Products

OIL

Kuwait’s oil exports are shifting from crude oil to refined petroleum products following the addition of new refining capacity, according to EIA Country Analysis data.

  • The country exported a record of more than 1mb/d of petroleum products and liquified petroleum gas in June and July 2023. Crude oil exports averaged about 1.6mb/d in June and July, down from an average of 1.8mb/d in the same period of 2022.
  • Kuwait has increased refining capacity to process 600kb/d of crude oil in Jan 2021 up to the current 1.4mb/d capacity. The increase in capacity comes from the new 615kb/d Al Zour refinery and an expansion project at existing refineries over the past two years.
  • Al Zour can produce around 220,000 b/d of low-sulfur fuel oil at full capacity.
  • In July, Asia received 46% of Kuwait’s petroleum product exports with Europe up to 29% from just 11% in Jul 2021.
