KZN Elections Highlight Hurdles to Ramaphosa’s Re-Nomination in December

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The ANC’s weekend conference in KwaZulu-Natal resulted in a clean sweep of victories for the pro-Zuma faction of the party, who have all argued against the President’s handling and treatment of the former President. The provincial party is now arguing for the ANC to drop the ‘step-aside’ rule that prevents members who face criminal charges from holding key positions in the party.
  • Nonetheless, newly elected chair Sboniso Duma attempted to convince party members to allow Ramaphosa to address the conference, although the crowd remained somewhat hostile as the President Ramaphosa spoke against factionalism within the party. While the election of pro-Zuma candidates was expected over the weekend, the results still make for a challenge at the nationwide ANC conference later this year, at which Ramaphosa seeks re-nomination as party head.
  • In a public letter, Ramaphosa wrote this morning that South Africa needs a new social compact, which his government has been working toward through identifying actions to achieve higher levels of growth, investment and unleash the dynamism of the private sector.
