Labour MP Quits, Triggering By-Election Test For PM In 'Red Wall'

UK

Mike Hill, the Labour MP for Hartlepool, has announced that he is standing down with immediate effect, triggering a by-election. There is no set date for a by-election yet.

  • The Hartlepool constituency (and its predecessors) in north-east England has been held by the centre-left Labour party since 1945. However, it sits within the so-called 'red wall' of seats in northern England in which Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservatives made a significant dent in the 2019 general election.
  • In 2019, Labour won 15,464 votes to the Conservatives' 11,869. In third was the now-defunct Brexit Party on 10,603 votes.
  • With a sizeable proportion of former Brexit Party voters likely to swing towards the Conservatives than Labour, this by-election is set to prove a stern test of whether PM Johnson's efforts to retain hold of these socially conservative but economically left-wing seats, or if the leadership of Sir Keir Starmer has done enough to remove the Labour Party's associations with former leader Jeremy Corbyn, who was singularly unpopular in this part of the country.
