Labour's Støre Sworn In As New PM Heading Minority Gov't

NORWAY

Norway has a new prime minister with the centre-left Labour Party's Jonas Gahr Støre sworn into office by King Harald V earlier today. Støre will lead a minority administration comprised of Labour (Ap) and the agrarian localist Centre Party (Sp).

  • The minority gov't holds just 76 seats in the 169-member parliament (Storting), short of the 85 required for a majority. However, this should not result in notable political instability, with Norwegian politics well-accustomed to minority governments.
  • The pool of potential allies on gov't legislation is also relatively large at around 25 seats. The most likely ally for Støre's gov't is the left-wing Socialist Left Party (SV), which was part of coalition talks until disagreements on climate change and taxation saw the coalition go ahead with just the Labour and Centre parties.
  • There is even the prospect of the environmentalist Greens, far-left Red Party, or single-issue Patient Focus offering the gov't support on certain legislation. However, given the incoming gov'ts vocal support for Norway's O&G sector and opposition to radical tax increases, securing Green or Red support could prove difficult.
