Labour's Starmer: Party Will 'Vote In The National Interest' On Any EU Deal

In PMQs, Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer says that if the PM comes back from Brussels with a deal that his Labour party will 'vote in the national interest', potentially hinting that he would instruct his MPs to support any agreement to avoid a no-deal Brexit.

  • Should Labour (or at least most of its MPs) back a potential Brexit deal it would ensure its passage through the Commons even if there was a significant rebellion from Brexiteer Conservative MPs.
  • However, for the PM relying on Labour for the passage of a Brexit deal could do significant damage to Johnson's position within his own party.
  • When Johnson's predecessor Theresa May mooted a similar prospect for the Withdrawal Agreement during her tenure it severely weakened her image with her own MPs and was seen as a further step towards her eventual ousting as leader.
