Lagarde: "Some Time" Could Mean A Week, Or Months

Q: Can you elaborate on the thinking in the GC to reduce the pace of the APP and why you didn’t wait another month? Do you see a rate hike in the course of this year if things develop as expected?
  • A: ECB watchers are not those who make GC decisions. It is the 25 members of the GC who look at what their mandate is, what the projections deliver, what the medium-term outlook for inflation looks like, what the risks are, what the uncertainty is and on the basis of all that they will try to deliver a predictable course while being very cautious. Doing what you have to do should be the predictable thing.
  • With respect to rates, “sometime after” is all-encompassing. It could mean a week after or months after. The time horizon is not what matters most, it is the data that will support the decision of the GC of whether a rate hike is warranted.
